We only visited Babycakes once (back in 2008) and we were completely underwhelmed. The items we tried were not really edible...such a waste of time to get there for that let down. I think they must have really improved things quite a bit, but since we have plenty of gf bakeries at home, we won't risk being disappointed again.

Go to Babycakes NYC for the best gluten free donuts.  BabyCakes offers all natural, organic and delicious baked goods that are free from gluten, casein and eggs.  Eat some at the bakery and take some home for later.  The bakery also offers mail-order delivery.

Babycakes has a great selection of gluten free treats, but really, it is all about the donuts. I don’t know how they make such good gluten free and vegan donuts.  These were “melt in your mouth so full of flavor I couldn’t believe they were gluten free” donuts.  We also sampled the banana bread, which was really just perfect and very hardy.  It stayed fresh for a few days.

The cupcakes have a distinct “Babycakes” flavor.  I think it is because they use bean flour.  And since the icing does melt pretty quickly, it’s best to eat them right away.

Babycakes is now a dedicated GF bakery.  In the past, they used spelt in some of their cupcakes.  Babycakes NYC stopped using spelt Spring of 2013 and according to the General Manager "(a)fter phasing out our spelt products, we deep cleaned our oven and kitchen area to make sure that there is no risk of cross contamination. We no longer use any of our utensils, bowls, cleaning utensils, measuring cups, and pans that were labeled spelt and have thoroughly bleached and deep cleaned the sink that was used for Spelt products."

Babycakes will also pour you a hot cup of tea, in addition, to other beverages.  There is a tiny bit of room to sit inside, but if it is a nice day you can sit out front and enjoy your treats and beverages while watching the diverse life of the neighborhood.

It should be noted that Babycakes is in what I would call an eclectic neighborhood.  I can appreciate the diversity in the neighborhood and we have never felt unsafe, but this is not 5th Avenue.   While you are there, pop around the corner and take in the Tenement Museum.
